With the assistance of Dr. Jeffery Wilkins (Vice Chair, Department of Psychology & Medical Director of Addiction Medicine at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles), the Foundation played a part in getting the 911 Good Samaritan (AB472) legislation passed in California. The law, which went in to effect on January 1, 2013 aims to reduce preventable drug-related overdose deaths. Witnesses of overdoses are protected by the new law which provides limited immunity for low-level drug law violations for those who call 911/take someone to the hospital for an overdose. The passage of the law will make California the tenth state in the country to ensure that witnesses who seek help in an overdose won’t face fear of arrest for possession of small amounts of illegal substances.
We have developed a partnership with several organizations and schools in New Jersey as the state passed the Good Samaritan Act (NJSA 2A:62A-1). Our Save A Life Card campaign features the New Jersey Good Samaritan Act on the back of the card. We have sent over 750,000 cards free of charge to be distributed in the state.
We are currently looking to develop partnerships in other states that have passed Good Samaritan laws. If you live in California, Colorado, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Washington D.C., Rhode Island, Illinois, Florida, Massachusetts, Connecticut, North Carolina, Vermont, Delaware, Washington or Georgia, please contact us! We can amend our Save A Life Card to feature the law in your state on the back of the card.
